The UCSB Vietnam War class is no longer what it was under Walter Capps [What Would Walter Do? April 10]. If you look at the speakers list over recent years, it has been dominated by American vets with PTSD and conscientious objectors. Walter included his Vietnamese students and other voices from that war in his class. When I first spoke at UCSB in 1993, there were 900 students in Campbell Hall. When I was there in 2000, there were less than 300. When I was there for my book tour in 2005 less than 75 showed up.
When I came off the stage in Campbell Hall in 1994, Walter whispered in my ears, “If you can capture what you’ve just shared with us, you’d have a terrific book.” What an encouragement that was! It took me another 11 years to publish “A Sense of Duty.” I can’t believe it has been almost 11 years since he passed away.
Remembering a fine man, scholar, and visionary.
