The flick of golden shovels on 6/12 symbolized the commencement of the Highway 101 widening project. Funded by Measure D (the road improvement tax), the four-year, four-stage project will result in, among other things, the installation of a new lane on each side of the stretch near the Milpas overpass, more sidewalks and bicycle trails, a new underpass at Cacique Street, and a roundabout at the intersection of Coast Village Road and Old Coast Highway. The county released its draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the proposed Santa Ynez Valley Community Plan this week. The plan encompasses large portions of the unincorporated county, including three townships-Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, and Ballard-and a total of 72 square miles. The area hasn’t been reviewed for land use and zoning designations since 1981’s countywide Comprehensive Plan update. A public hearing on the EIR is scheduled for 7/9 in Solvang. (/santaynezplan)
