In a move to take into account inflation as well as the costs of city improvements like lateral sewer line replacements, Santa Barbara City Council members voted unanimously to increase trash and water rates. Likely to become effective 7/1, the increase means residents can expect a to pay about $2 more per month for both water and waste water services and $1 more per month for trash service. The increase calls for a 3.5 percent increase for water utilities, 6.5 percent bump in waste water, and 4.5 percent more for trash collection. The matter will return to the council for final approval next week.

To better understand and better serve Santa Barbara’s homeless, City Council members created a three-member subcommittee this week. Choosing to forgo the standard practice of forming a task force, the council created a more streamlined subcommittee that will, among other things, hold public hearings with interested parties, looking to address homelessness-related issues.

Fans of presumptive Republican Party presidential nominee John McCain will get a chance to show their support, both personally and financially, when the Arizona senator stops in Santa Barbara on 6/23. Aside from the $1,000-per-ticket fundraising event at the home of Carol and Bill Foley, McCain may also appear at a renewable energy-related event the following day, details of which were not available at press time.
