With Father’s Day right around the corner, what better way to celebrate all things family than a kid-friendly evening of reading and rejoicing with the fine folks behind Girls Inc.’s newest book, More Letters from the Heart? The collaborative effort, which features illustrations and quotes from a slew of young girls, as well as letters from some truly inspiring women, was put out earlier this year in conjunction with the organization’s 50th anniversary. And since its release, the Girls Inc. collaborative has been sponsoring a series of discussions with the book’s contributors titled Celebrating Sisterhood at bookstores throughout Santa Barbara.

This month, the talk will get a little dose of dude in honor of Dad’s Day. On Friday, June 13, at 7 p.m., the Borders in Goleta (7000 Marketplace Dr.) will play host to Extraordinary Men in Exceptional Women’s Lives: The Power of Good Words. Featuring More Letters from the Heart contributors Betty J. Rosness, Perie Longo, Judi Weisbart, and Claire de L’Arbre, the talk will focus on the important role that guys play in the lives of young ladies. In her contribution, Rosness, a former ad executive, waxes poetic about how her father reached hero status in her eyes early on, saying, “Both of my parents supported and loved me unconditionally, but it was my dad who told me he was proud that I was determined for so long to save my marriage …” The night will engage the audience in dialogue, as well as culminate with a book-signing with all four of the authors on hand.

And with written works from successful, skilled, independent, and exemplary women ranging from Congressmember Lois Capps to Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller to World Champion surfer Kim Mearig, More Letters from the Heart is well worth its list price. The book can be purchased for a mere $29.95 for hardback and $19.95 for soft cover at local book retailers. And proceeds from all sales go toward the Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara educational programs, which serve more than 1,000 girls and young women in our community.
