[Press Releases from Santa Barbara County Emergency Operations]

Gap Fire Impacts Dos Pueblos High’s Summer Session. Classes will Resume on Monday, July 7, at La Colina Junior High School.

Beginning Monday, July 7, Dos Pueblos High School’s summer school program will resume at La Colina Junior High School, 4025 Foothill Road, Santa Barbara. La Colina has been reopened to accommodate more than 300 Dos Pueblos students. Staff from both schools are working together to prepare classrooms, transport books and materials, and establish food service. Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) has worked diligently to accommodate the unexpected transportation needs.

It is very important that students return to get the academic help they need to be successful in school. The summer session serves: English learners who are taking English to improve their skills and students; students who are behind in credits and are catching up to be on track for graduation or promotion; students taking courses specific to preparing them to pass the High School Exit Exam; and/or students who are retaking classes in which they had a difficult time meeting the standards.

“With so many Dos Pueblos High School staff living and working in areas affected by the Gap Fire, we are very appreciative of the incredible efforts they are making to maintain the summer school program. Summer school is still going on and students will be accommodated and safe,” stated Superintendent Brian Sarvis.

MTD will continue to provide transit service for Dos Pueblos-bound summer school students as follows:

Additional Mask Distribution Information, Saturday, July 5th

Direct Relief International (DRI), in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Health Department and the City of Goleta will continue distributing free NIOSH N-95 face masks to residents who cannot avoid outdoor exposure to the wildland fire smoke generated by the Gap Fire.

Distribution will be from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, July 5th, at the Camino Real Marketplace Kiosk between Borders and the movie theater.

New Call Center Established, Gap Fire Information Available at (805) 681-5195

In response to overwhelming call volume, Santa Barbara County has established a new Public Information Call Center for public on the Gap Fire.

Effective immediately, the public may call (805) 681-5195, for updates on the status of the incident. The line will be staffed from 8 a.m. to midnight to provide information as the fire situation changes and the risk to the community subsides.

The Los Padres National Forest Information Center, which is handling calls for the Gap Fire as well as the Basin Complex (Monterey County) and the Indians Fire, can still be reached at (805) 961-5770.

In addition to the call centers, information on the Gap Fire burning north of Goleta, is also available at www.countyofsb.org and www.inciweb.org, as well as on local cable channel 20 (CSBTV).

Thank you for the excellent map -

Too bad it does us no good when the power goes out!

Don't count on the kiosks to give you anything up to date -
The Camino Real Kiosk had a map showing the fire perimeter as of July 2 !! right up to this morning (July 5th!)

I asked the attending Goleta City official why we couldn't get more up to date info such as the map above for us the computerless, TV-less and electrically challenged (i.e those closest to the fire without power and most in need) - he did not know. Thanks. Also don't count on KTMS 990 - see my comments and those of others at: http://www.independent.com/news/2008/
jul/02/gap-fire-intensifies/

These and other comments about this subject mysteriously dissappeared but I reposted them.

If KTMS hasn't suggested removal as they apparently did the first time (since I invited them to the discussion) I posted them again have a look.

When the power is out or you are driving in your car and have no internet or TV - these are the only sources available of just where the fire perimeter is and they have NO IDEA - they don't send anyone into the field, they just report and rehash what they have heard at press conferences, or you are forced to drive around to see for yourself. This is not advisable when the roads are supposed to be used for evacuation and emergency services.

If you are the closest to the fire and your power goes out as is most likely the case - sadly, despite all of the emergency preparedness we have been hearing about from the City and County propaganda, you are on your own with zero communication - no idea where the fire is, how fast it is approaching, how your friends and loved ones might be doing, nothing up to date, nothing to help make decisions about whether to stay or go- maybe a two day old fire perimeter map at a kiosk. That's it.

We have become a society dependent on power and internet for information - most people do not even have land phones that work without power!

Pity us when something like this happens during Santa Ana conditions...we got lucky this time, maybe.

RForsyth's observations are right on. If you look at the latest map of the fire it is dated July 3rd. Not much help when you are wondering where the fire is moving. The Channel 20 news continues to be a rehash of a press conference held on the 3rd. At least some news venues reported the conference today ( July 5th) so we can get some news. You would think that with all the resources that the various agencies bring to bear that at least they would have some method of updating the information they disseminate.

In response to SBComputerGuy, we have provided a link to our Google-based map which Ray Ford updated today, July 5 at noon. Ray will attempt to update twice a day.

And for RForsyth, if you have a cell phone, follow our link to www.twitter.com/sbinde and you will have our frequent updates sent to your cell phone, as long as your cell phone accepts text messages and is operational -- power or not.
