The Lowdown: “So many classes, so little time” was the comment uttered by someone at the Schott Center last week when she picked up the new schedule of classes for spring. Monday, April 7 marks the beginning of the spring term, so it seems an all-too appropriate time to talk about the “many classes” currently being offered by Adult Ed.

The numbers alone are impressive: there are over 750 day, evening, and weekend classes to choose from, taught by over 500 instructors — most of whom are local residents and respected experts in their field. Add to that the broad range of subject areas, and you can see why SBCC Adult Ed is one of the most popular continuing education programs in the state.

Do you want to learn to play musical instrument, paint a picture, make your own jewelry, speak a foreign language, or cook international cuisine? If you answered “yes,” then Adult Ed has something for you. If you are looking to learn a new job skill, there are programs for that too, including courses in green gardening, notary public training, and auto mechanics. Get to know how to use the latest software in one of the 40 different computer courses being offered, or get your finances in order with one of the personal finance classes. Reduce stress and improve your physical health at the same time with a yoga class, Tai Chi, Aikido, or Qigong.

There are literature classes, film classes, and classes that discuss current events. There’s a woodworking class that makes toys for the Unity Shoppe, classes for parents with young children, and classes for the elderly. The health education program and the psychology program both offer courses for the general public — and for professionals in those fields who are seeking continuing education credits (CEUs). The Mind & Supermind series (a community favorite) brings to town internationally renowned psychologists, scientists, philosophers, medical professionals, and healers to speak on “expanding the limits of consciousness.”

Basic skills are also a major part of what Adult Ed is all about, providing the community with the Adult High School program, GED preparation, English as a second language program, STEP (Step Toward Education Program and Step Toward Employment Program), and Citizenship Center.
