As a strong proponent of Measure A—the November ballot initiative that can both save taxpayers money and get more people involved in civic government by moving Santa Barbara city elections from odd to even years—it saddens me to see police and firefighters expressing opposition. Small voter turnout may guarantee them tidbits from pet politicians, but to get what they really need and deserve, police and firefighters ought to be welcoming a large, politically involved electorate that understands the financial challenge of living and raising a family in this community. I hope they’ll change their stance. —Jon Williams
