Let’s get something straight: The supporters of Measure A have no special fondness for the current members of City Council, or for any of the folks who may replace them at the November election. The one-time adjustment to catch up and transition to even-year cycles is just that—a one-time adjustment adding one year to the current four year term of all Council members.
The merits of Measure A have nothing to do with favoring City Council members. The merits include saving money by doing away with a single, stand-alone election held during odd years, having the oversight and management of elections under the independently-elected County Registrar of Voters, and aligning election practice with that of all other local jurisdictions in Santa Barbara County.
