While we are glad that on Aug. 30, the Indy finally covered Measure A on the upcoming Santa Barbara City ballot, I am disappointed that news reporter Chris Meagher labeled me as "sympathetic to many of the Council members" This is an insinuation that my motives are anything but simply saving taxpayer money, nearly doubling voter turnout, and requiring the elected Registrar of Voters to conduct the elections instead of the City's own staffers. Just because backers of Measure A practice a cordial and civil relationship with the City Council and attend some of their free parties, that does not mean we are sympathetic surrogates doing the Council's bidding. We are as displeased with Council decisions as anybody, depending upon the issue. We members of the Santa Barbara Clean Elections Working Group and other supporters of Measure A routinely disagree with City Council decisions, and we often speak out during public meetings, only to be rejected or ignored as much as anybody. The disappointing outcome of the Municipal Election Campaign Disclosure Ordinance is just one example from earlier this year. The three Council members who big-time flip-flopped on the anti-Arroyo Veronica Meadows project, or the five of them who denied my bid to be a planning commissioner just might be reason enough to lose any sympathies from me. —David Pritchett
