The California Highway Patrol is investigating the death of man who ran into of traffic on the Northbound 101 between the La Cumbre Road overpass and the Highway 154 overpass at approximately 7:50 p.m. on October 23. A statement from CHP spokesman Donald Clotworthy said the man has been identified as a 54-year-old Caucasian transient who was intoxicated at the time of the accident, but the man's name will not be released until notification of his family.

Investigators say the man was at first struck by a 1989 Toyota Camry, driven by 23-year-old Yolanda Sertero Julian of Goleta, when he ran from the shoulder towards the center divide. The body was tossed over the roof of the car then struck by at least three other cars before officers arrived on the scene, closing off two lanes and slowing traffic considerably in order to conduct their investigation. CHP was able to identify Ms. Julian as the driver when she was taken to Cottage Hospital, approximately one hour after the collision, for treatment of an eye injury sustained from broken glass from the windshield of her Toyota. She was not arrested and is not being considered to be a hit and run suspect. Two of the three other cars who struck the body have also been identified.

Clotworthy said an increasing number of homeless people have been setting up camps near the highway on a stretch of 101 beginning near Milpas, and said that CHP has been working with CALTRANS and the County Health Department in order to help these individuals find a safer place to stay.

The collision remains under investigation and any one with further information is urged to contact CHP at 967-1234 or 477-4174.
