I was taken aback by the comment attributed to [Santa Barbara School] Board President Nancy Harter in The Independent's report on budget cutting ("Big Cuts, Big Blood," Apr. 26). According to the report, it came as a surprise to the Board that two of the music teachers affected by the budget cuts were in the audience. One of the teachers stood up to leave and Ms. Harter exclaimed, "Yikes! That sucks. I'm sorry." Using the term "sucks" is always a surprise to me—call me old-fashioned—when it comes from an adult, but it is especially disheartening coming from the president of the Santa Barbara School Board. Many parents and teachers do their best to teach kids not to use that kind of language and I know that its usage is all too common among the younger set. It distresses me however that one of our elected educational officials is incapable of communicating without resorting to such slang, especially when speaking in public.—Rich Ciolino
