UCSB Presents Conference on Chinese Medicine

Explore an integrated approach to healing through the combination of Chinese and Western medicine this weekend at UCSB. From tomorrow until Sunday, May 5, the UCSB Global Medicine Project will present a conference on “Integrating Chinese and Western Medicine: The View From China.”

Traditional Chinese medicine is focused on an approach to healing through prevention and treatment using methods often classified by the Western world as alternative medicine: acupuncture, herbal remedies, or energy balancing techniques. Especially when combined with Western medicine, physicians are finding increasing evidence of the health benefits of using these traditional practices.

The conference, co-sponsored by Cottage Hospital and SBCC Adult Education, will discuss findings on approaches to medical care that has been in use in China for years. This fusion of technology and tradition has been found to alleviate ailments like cancer, arthritis, asthma, and diabetes.

Six prominent Chinese doctors and scholars — from as close as downtown Santa Barbara and as far as Beijing — will provide overviews, case studies, and treatment protocols that have benefited people suffering from some of the worst diseases of today. Speakers include local Dr. Henry Han, who has had a private practice in Santa Barbara for over 18 years and will discuss the integrative approaches for the treatment of cancer. Dr. Kenji Chen is widely considered one of the most important people involved in the integration between Chinese and Western medicines. A pioneering figure, he was selected over 50 years ago as part of select group of Western doctors chosen to study traditional Chinese medicine in an effort to link the two. He will give the convention keynote address.

This conference is dedicated to the life of Rudi Schulte, and is presented as a free event, open to the public. For times and information, visit the official website.
