With new research showing that global warming is an even more pressing issue than previously thought, the environmental programs in place in Santa Barbara shine as a viable solution. But frankly, that is not enough.
Global warming and the exhaustion of our natural resources are not Santa Barbara issues only. They are issues on a national and global scale. It takes thousands of cities across the world with an environmental consciousness like Santa Barbara's to reverse the patterns of pollution and overuse. Santa Barbara has set the example, but others must follow if we are to see real change.
I applaud Lois Capps for her support of HB 969, a national clean energy standard of 20 percent by 2020. The bill will be on the floor of the house this summer and, if passed, will be the single most important piece of legislation in creating a national environmental consciousness in the spirit of Santa Barbara's. -Stephanie Harnett
