Congresswoman Lois Capps, who sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said she will oppose coal-based fuels as an alternative to oil dependence. “I have very strong concerns with efforts to encourage coal to liquid fuel,” Capps said, including the release of mercury that makes its way into fish consumed by humans. Attempts to include coal projects in the Senate version of the energy bill were withdrawn, but coal supporters have expressed interest in reintroducing them in the House with the addition of cleaner production processes.
