— It’s easier to be picky about pizza than hot dogs, if for no other reason than you see what’s on your pizza and a hot dog’s grind could be anything. Paradoxically that knowledge is quite freeing, so one can eat a Costco dog (especially at a buck-fifty with drink) but shy away from their pizza since gourmet versions exist (most notably LA’s Pizzeria Mozza). Of late, however, it’s Costco that’s been shy – its food court has been closed for renovations.

The Costco hot dog and drink costs a mere buck-fifty.

What kind, you may ask? Well, you can try to ask, but Costco won’t tell you. If you penetrate the phone tree and get people to answer the phone, they tell you “Costco doesn’t do interviews,” as if asking what the renovations were about is an attempt to go Upton Sinclair on their corporate selves.

Still, the best cheapest lunch in the county will be up and running again on July 5. Maybe then the workers at the window will talk.
