Ban the bottle! Bottled water-which is officially a “food product” and therefore supervised by the FDA and not the EPA-is the marketer’s revenge on Earth. The bottles create unnecessary waste since they are often made from petroleum, and the water gets shipped great distances, which burns fuels and adds to global warming. What’s more, “Pepsi’s Aquafina, the best-selling brand, and Coke’s Dasani, which is second, are made from purified tap water” (according to CNN.com). The answer in an area like ours with hard water that isn’t the most palatable is to get a filtration system of your own and cut out the corporate middleman. Even a Brita pitcher in the fridge is more efficient-and reusable-than endless six- packs of plastic. If you have to have water con gas, hunt down a working antique seltzer bottle, which is not only a classy antique but also a lot of fun in a no-water-barred fight.
