The American Journalism Review issue of December/January contains another article of interest to anyone following A Local Daily's staging of an Elizabethan tragedy.
It begins like this:
Ever since the Santa Barbara News-Press became engulfed in controversy in July, owner Wendy McCaw and her top subordinates have ordered staff members to remain quiet or face termination; have threatened or filed lawsuits against former employees and other media; have refused multiple requests for interviews; and have then complained about being unfairly targeted by ignorant outsiders. This article is dated "October/November," although it came out simultaneous to the previously mentioned article. A Local Freebie is also mentioned.

This is Wendy's m.o. Neurotically control information, access to information, and reject all overtures toward dialogue. It just keeps getting worse. She issues threats to any and all her enemies or anyone who might become one, demands silence from those whom she has no right to make the demand, lies about the circumstances leading to them attaining their well-earned anti-Wendy status, "bans" people, defames people, hides from her critics and pretends they don't exist and/or are the dupes of others of her critics, and acts offended and vindictively when anyone doesn't act in a servile way toward her. If you haven't been editorialized against in the News-Press, then you aren't doing your anti-Wendy job very well. She's kind of like a turtle who encases herself in a protective shell to keep the world from engaging her, only venomous when she emerges with her attack (and delay) lawyers.

It is sobering and sad when yet another esteemed outside journalist confirms the outrageous actions of SB's infamous media mogul. Reality stings--we really have lost our daily paper. The Mess is only good for wraping dead fish--leaving us to question: which smells worse--the paper or the fish?

As I found in my neighbor's recyclables bin (who reads it only for the obits), the NewsPress TV listing magazine ("TV Week") in the Sunday edition now has deleted local cable Channels 17 and 21 from the listings. These are the community-access TV channels from Santa Barbara Channels, the local nonprofit organization for community-access TV.
Apparently, the NewsPress excuse for this is that they do not have room on the page to make the listings fit, so they dropped both of the channels, 17 and 21, even though a week and more ago they did have room on the page.
Anyone half awake, though, might surmise that they are just angry that SBChannelsTV has shown a series of video shows, by local producers, that document the demise of the newspaper and the various rallies and events where the unionized employees and publics comment about all that. The most recent coverage was the vigil event and lite demonstration held in front of Biltmore hotel on 11 November.
If one considers TV listings to be news, this is yet another example of how the opinion stance of the newspaper has interfered with the news content, by deliberately deleting news they do not like.
Of course, for full listings of local TV (cable or satellite), a good place to look is YahooTV or others:

MISSING: channels 17 & 21 from Wendy's sbnp. Well, whats a wealthy paranoid to do?.... How many ways can Wendy say she hates this community (must change/censor)? Schlessinger speaks for Wendy, in her convoluted way, responding to 10-27-06 sbnp news about violent threats. Instead of directly addressing the violence she publishes a letter from Jeff Paley (11-2-06 sbnp column). Planting seeds of thought, there are those times private business should censor, hmmmm? Wouldn't that have prevented the violent threats? They do not directly comment on the violent threats. Aren't they either for or against that technique? They go into their opinions and "what ifs", a kind of change/censor for my POV. Their thinking puts the likes of the Schlessingers/Paleys at one with those who use violent threats. Wouldn't a more responsible columnist (paper), printing a response to that news item start with addressing the violence and threats? She skips both sides of an issue having expression, it's more like blame the business if it's not the expression they like. If Schlessingers/Paleys way is heeded we get peace. Schlessinger says: "My reply, especially to the T-shirt proclamation of America as torturer, is that the anti-democratic forces, combined with the naive and ignorant, is the greatest danger to world peace ever!" Well, who wants to be "naive and ignorant" or "anti-democratic"? She continues by suggesting you read Haim Harari. It fits well into Wendy's world and all this in a local column by a self proclaimed moralist, who also goes by "Mother Laura!". How harmless is that? From The Sound of Silence by Susan Paterno: "Mike Paul, who described himself as 'Dr. Laura's global PR consultant.' He said Schlessinger is 'a global brand, and she gets media opportunities all the time. If you don't provide the questions, then we can't help you.'" How many ways can they say, ask the questions we will answer or we ignore you? For what are they preparing? Wendy's sbnp will change/censor ("transition") everyway they can and they are in it for the long haul.
