The local nonprofit New Beginnings Counseling Center will take
center stage on PBS this week, when the station KCET airs its
popular Friday-night television program California Connected.
Beginning at 8:30 p.m., the show will highlight the center’s unique
parking project, which provides secure RV-style overnight parking
for homeless folks in the area. Looking to offset Santa Barbara’s
stringent parking regulations, the center offers 50 free spaces –
along with case management services and support – from 7 p.m. to 7
a.m. every day at various city, county, and nonprofit parking lots.
Participants must show proof of current driver’s licenses and
insurance, and promise to remain free of drugs and alcohol in order
to qualify for the program. According to staff, every lot is full
on a nightly basis.
