The Martin Luther King Steering Committee invites all to attend the Martin Luther King Jr. Day events on January 20, 2014. The Theme for this year is "Lift Every Voice", which reflects everyone’s opportunity to be a part of social justice issues. Beginning at 9am at De La Guerra Plaza there will be a morning program, which will begin with a Chumash blessing and a special recognition honoring the legacy of Dr. King. Included will be Gospel singing and music by local musician, Diego Torres. Songs to be sung on the March up State Street will be taught. At 10am the Unity March will start, leading to the historic Arlington Theater, located at 1317 State Street in Santa Barbara. The 11am program at the Theatre will include young winners of the Essay and Poetry contest, dignitaries, and a Mass Community Choir. Also planned will be a reconciliation dialogue, which was well received last year. All who attend will be enriched by Dr. King’s story of peace, non-violence and civil rights, in a way that is rare and educational. Everyone is invited to be a part of his remarkable legacy. All events are offered free to the public, as a gift to the City, by the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee of Santa Barbara, a diverse group of volunteers who plan year round for this day, as well as other events.
