Description:

SENGA Classic Stage Company presents The Importance of Being Earnest (A Trivial Comedy for Serious People). Oscar Wilde’s most famous comedy is directed by Francisca Beach. Two flippant young men, Jack and Algernon, in order to impress their respected beloveds, pretend that their names are “Ernest,” Both young ladies, Gwendolen and Cecily, believe the name to confer magical qualities on the possessor. The iconic role of the matriarch Lady Bracknell has been played in the past by Dame Edith Evans and Dame Judi Dench; In SENGA’s production William Waxman - in a cross gender role - will play Lady Bracknell. Working within the social conventions of late Victorian London, the play's major themes are the triviality with which it treats institutions as serious as marriage, and the resulting satire of Victorian ways. It was first performed for the public on February 14, 1895 at the St. James’ Theatre in London, and is regarded by many critics and scholars as being the wittiest play in the English language. “To miss it would most definitely look like carelessness”.
