Description:

Ray West, 87, is an Oscar-winning sound mixer. His work in the visual arts is now the promotional piece for The Samarkand’s Spring Art Show.

West took the photograph entitled “Half Dome” in Yosemite, Calif. The Samarkand is using the work to promote the art show. The Samarkand art show will highlight the work of West’s fellow residents and Samarkand staff; the show will include two- and three-dimensional art. A variety of media will be represented, including watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels, photography, pen and ink, computer-generated art, sculpture, collage and ceramics. Whether from seasoned professionals like West or new artists, all of the work was created in the last two years.

“The Spring Art Show is a long-standing tradition at The Samarkand,” says show organizer Diane Huyck, Samarkand activity director. “We have a plethora of talent on this campus. Residents express their talent in the energy they bring to campus life. They always want to create and learn new things.”

Huyck responds to that desire by holding a variety of art classes. She started with basic color theory and regularly brings in other artists to teach classes such as watercolor and mosaics. Next on the list: slab hand-building ceramics.
