Lighthouses, Fresnel Lenses, and Lens Preservation Lecture by James Woodward
A special presentation by James Woodward, the lampist commissioned by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum to disassemble, conserve, restore, and re-assemble the First Order Fresnel Lens from Point Conception Lighthouse.

The talk is titled “Lighthouses, Fresnel Lenses, and Lens Preservation.” Mr. Woodward, who spent over 40 years in the United States Coast Guard, and is one of only five “Lampists” allowed by the Coast Guard to work on these lenses, will discuss the history and development of major aids to navigation, the history of the classical Fresnel lens, and its maintenance and repair. He will also cover the history of lighting, some early lighthouse structures, the architecture of American lights, Fresnel lens and his personal restoration efforts across the United States.
