The Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary is pleased to announce the Dedication Ceremony of the Skylar Learning Center inspired by 6 year old parrot lover, Skylar Runswick. Jamie McLeod, Director of the SBBS, and Skylar will be in attendance.
After visiting the Sanctuary twice a year on family trips to California, Skylar set up a cocoa stand last winter in her home state of Idaho and surprised the Director of the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary, Jamie McLeod, by mailing the proceeds from her stand to be used to feed the parrots at SBBS. Skylar's Grandmother then offered to support the first phase of a children’s educational facility so that other youth might have the same opportunity as Skylar. The project began in April and Phase One of the Skylar Learning Center is due to be completed this month.
Sanctuary director, Jamie McLeod states, “Thanks to the generous heart of a young girl thousands of local kids, in every grade level, will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with our flock. By using a hands-on approach with our Sanctuary’s residents, we will cultivate a respect and appreciation for nature early in the life of a child. With budget cuts and school curriculum pared down to the basics perhaps we can give some educational enrichment back to our community’s youth; after all, they are our future.”
Phase One of the Learning Center consists of an outdoor presentation stage featuring a rock cave and waterfall as well as a shaded outdoor seating area. The public is welcome to come by, see the progress, and say hello to the Sanctuary residents who just might say hello back! Sanctuary hours are daily from 10am-4pm except Tuesdays they are closed. Classes and presentations will be available for the fall semester when Phase Two is completed. SBBS is accepting donations for Phase Two of the learning center. To make a tax-deductible donation please visit the sanctuary or check out their website at www.sbbird.org.
The Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of unwanted, abused, and orphaned companion parrots. In addition, we act as a resource within the community to promote responsible ownership through education and owner support. Our focus is rehabilitation, both in terms of health and behavior, so that adoption into a loving home is possible. For those birds that are not adoptable, it is our goal that they remain safely in Sanctuary for the duration of their lives.
