Description:

Life is a Drag is a new play developed by fourth year student Joel I. Rivas, currently a fourth year Theater major in the Directing concentration at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The play was developed as part of an independent research project at UCSB.

Manny, a sixteen year old teenager living at the outskirts of New York City, has always danced around in his mother's heels and dresses whenever she went off to work. But on a cloudy evening he is discovered by his mother. Manny comes out to her in hopes of making her understand, being confused by her religious upbringing she denies him, leaving him to fend for himself. In a desperate attempt to find help, Manny runs away from home to a Drag Bar in Brooklyn where he begins his journey to self discovery. With the help of two bubbly drag sisters, an experienced drag mother, an envious drag queen and the taunting inner voice of the Norm, Manny discovers what it truly means to love oneself.

"Life is a Drag" takes the audience and Manny through an unseen and unknown rabbit hole, in which the rules of gender are broken entirely. By combining the art of Drag and the art of theater, the play redefines "musicals" by incorporating popular songs by inspirational queens, such as Beyonce and Diana Ross in a witty way that helps the story move along. The play looks into the challenges of having to discover oneself and what it means to be a victim of our time.
