With a family tree of five-generations of mariachi musicians that hail from La Sierra del Tigre region of Jalisco, México, Jose Hernandez is one of the leaders in bringing the music to new audiences in the U.S. and developing programs for educating future musicians.
Founded in 1981 in Los Angeles, Mariachi Sol de México has performed for sold out audiences in concert halls worldwide from Lincoln Center in New York, to Viña del Mar, Santiago Chile, to Beijing and Poyngyang in South Korea. They have performed for four presidents including special concerts at the White House. Sol de México have performed with the great vocalists Vicente Fernandez, Selena, Jose Feliciano and Luis Miguel - and have created unexpected collaborations with singers such as Willie Nelson, the Beach Boys, and Lady Gaga.
Always an innovator, Jose Hernandez' work shows mariachi music as one of the most vertsatile of genres of Latin music. His collaborations with symphony orchestras has created a marriage of styles that seems natural now. "Everybody in Latin America serenades their girlfriends or their wife with mariachi music - because they see it in the movies. But it has evolved so much over the last 20 years it's almost like a classical art form," Jose says.
