Dozens of historic railroad depot buildings in Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties are covered in the 320-page book, which includes hundreds of historical photographs and other illustrations, many in full color. Goleta Depot, along with surviving depot buildings in Oceano and several Ventura County cities and towns are covered. Bender also focuses on many area depots that no longer exist, including – in Santa Barbara County alone – at Carpinteria, Summerland, Montecito, Miramar, Santa Barbara, Hope Ranch, Ellwood, Naples, Gaviota, Pt. Conception, Surf, Lompoc, Guadalupe, and many other locations.
Henry Bender has written extensively on railroad topics, with an emphasis on the Southern Pacific Railroad and the American country railroad station. Copies of his book will be available for purchase, with all proceeds benefitting the railroad museum.
The Bender book signing will be a part of the 5th annual ARailroad Days,@ taking place at the museum over the Aug. 17-18 weekend. Hours for Railroad Days are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. During Railroad Days there will also be a large sale of railroad- and history-related items, including new and used model railroad supplies, books, clothing, videos, posters, collectibles and railroadiana.
The event will also include free miniature-train rides, from 1 to 4 p.m. both days, sponsored by the Bank of Montecito and The Towbes Group. Free handcar rides will be offered, Saturday only, also from 1 to 4 p.m.
