Performance by UCSB Arts and Lecture features one of the world’s leading trumpeters, Alison Balsom also ranks among classical music’s great ambassadors. The “magnetic and distinctive” (The Times, U.K.) musician has swept up multiple Classic FM, Gramophone and Echo Klassik awards. In what’s sure to be an electrifying performance, she’ll play both the baroque and modern trumpets with the versatile and always surprising Scottish Ensemble, a tight-knit group of outstanding string players who perform regularly under Artistic Director Jonathan Morton.

The Ensemble’s recent live album with Balsom, Seraph (January 2012), featuring modern trumpet concertos, and Balsom’s new album of festive English Baroque music, Sound the Trumpet (October 2012), both won high praise from reviewers around the globe.

The program will include selections from Sound the Trumpet, which features the glorious celebratory music by Handel and Purcell long associated with British royalty. It also includes a rare performance of Handel’s Suite for Trumpet and Strings, Balsom’s arrangements of concertos by Italian Baroque masters Vivaldi and Albinoni, as well as Geminiani’s “La Follia” concerto – so named for its many variations on an irresistible ancient melody that once drove dancers into a frenzy!
