Kanako Fukase was born in Kochi, Japan on the island of Shikoku. After having spent many years as a professional graphic designer in Japan, she moved to the U.S. and currently resides in Santa Barbara. In addition, Kathryn Ford Onano has been collecting Japanese vintage kimono from both sides of the Pacific Rim and transforming imperfect kimono into wearable art. Her label, Onano, now adorns vests and ties―each unusual for its beading, hand-painting, embroidery, or ancestral markings―and sold in such stores as I. Magnin, Neiman Marcus, Sami Dinar and Fred Segal.
