The choir is composed of alumni and friends of the Luther College Nordic Choir from Decorah, Iowa. Representing Luther classes from 1949 to 2014, the group will meet for four days of intense rehearsals culminating in a concert for the public at Curry Village at Yosemite National Park. The choir will follow with a tour down the California coast. Similar West Coast tours were a highlight of Noble’s 57-year tenure on the faculty of the acclaimed music program at Luther.
Weston Noble’s brothers Dale and Joe—both distinguished choral conductors—live in Santa Barbara and will sing with the choir.
Music for the alumni choir concert will include: “Hosanna to the Son of David” by Orlando Gibbons; “The Omnipotence” by Franz Schubert; “The May Night” by Johannes Brahms; “Soli Deo Gloria” by Marty Haugen; “Fare Thee Well Love” by Jimmy Rankin, arranged by James Quitman Mulholland; “The Lord Is the Everlasting God” by Kenneth Jennings; “When The Saints Go Marching In” arranged by John Rutter; “Ezekiel Saw de Wheel” arranged by William L. Dawson; and Noble’s signature closing piece, “O Lord God” by Paul Tchesnokoff.
Three of the nine pieces on the program (the Rutter, Haugen and Jennings works) were written for or are dedicated to Noble.
