Crisman Cooley - Contact Improvisation is the extraordinary new form of dance quickly spreading world wide that allows dancers to safely explore their own limits of strength, flexibility, balance, and intimacy, and to use fully eight senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch, temperature, nociception, equilibrioception, and proprioception) while often reaching deep states of meditation and bliss. This workshop will cover the basics of contact improvisation dance and will introduce practices for more advanced contact: Warm Up, Opening circle, Levels, Care taking, Initiating the dance, No contact, Matching energy, Shape Mirroring, First contact, Contact mirroring, Rolling all fours, Rolling prone/supine, Rolling on foot, Leading / following, Ending the dance, Groups, Jam, Closing circle.
Crisman Cooley, Director of Fantazius Theatre Company, has been practicing contact improvisation for seven years and leading classes in contact for three years in Mexico and the United States. His background in theatre improv has been useful in developing a sense of immediacy, trust, willingness to be vulnerable, and intimacy required in contact improv dance. Yoga training has helped him to develop core strength, flexibility, and balance essential to the contact improvisational form.
