Description: This conference will honor the fortieth anniversary of the founding of Catolicos Por La Raza in Los Angeles. Organized in 1969, Catolicos Por La Raza was part of the Chicano Movement and focused its civil rights struggle on pressuring the Catholic Church to become more sensitive and supportive of its large Chicano Catholic population. This conference will consist of a keynote address by Prof. Mario T. Garcia (Chicano Studies, UCSB), editor of Chicano Liberation Theology: The Writings and Documents of Richard Cruz and Catolicos Por La Raza (2009).
A panel of Chicano Catholic Studies scholars will discuss the historical importance of Catolicos Por La Raza. This panel will consist of Profs. Alberto Pulido (UCSD); Lara Medina (Cal State Northridge); and Gilbert Cadena, (Cal Poly Pomona).
