John Calambokidis will present new information from ongoing research on humpback and blue whales in the Santa Barbara Channel and elsewhere in the North Pacific. The presentation will include insights into the migrations and breeding habits of blue whales (featured in a 2-hour National Geographic show scheduled to air in March 2009). New findings on the behavior of blue whales in the shipping lanes and strategies for avoiding ship strikes will be presented. Some of the groundbreaking discoveries from the recently completed SPLASH humpback whale project, one of the largest studies of any whale population ever conducted, will also be featured.
