Description: Retired widower Ali, a Turkish immigrant living in Bremen, Germany believes he has found a solution to his loneliness when he meets Turkish-born prostitute, Yeter. Ali offers her a monthly payment to move in with him and be his exclusive lover, and she accepts. Ali’s son Nejat, a literature professor, initially disapproves of Yeter, but soon grows fond of her, especially upon discovering that she sends money to her daughter, Ayten, in Turkey for her university studies. Yeter's sudden death, an accident caused by a drunken blow from Ali, creates a breach between father and son. Bereaved, Nejat travels to Istanbul in search of Ayten. He decides to stay in Turkey and trades places with the owner of a German bookstore who returns to Germany. What Nejat doesn’t know is that political activist Ayten is already in Germany, having fled the Turkish police. Ayten is befriended by German student Lotte, who becomes totally wrapped up in Ayten’s plight. As the lives of the characters cross and entwine, there is a sense of human connections becoming stronger, of a fragile moral order coalescing beneath the randomness and cruelty. By German writer/director Fatih Akin.

Every week of my life.
The stranger
arrives with a
present agility,
and so my
desire appears
near a delicate
border, the side
of my life that
discovers a dream.
