The Santa Barbara Symphony plays a final concert before moving to the Granada
When: Sunday, May 11, 2008, 3 p.m.
Where: Arlington Theatre, 1317 State St., Santa Barbara
Cost: $18 - $59
Age limit: Not available
Categories: Classical
Description: Nir Kabaretti and the Symphony depart with a bang: the May concerts feature Beethoven’s virtuosic Violin Concerto, performed by soloist Augustin Hadelich; Strauss’s towering Death and Transfiguration; and conclude with Ravel’s unabashedly pulsating Bolero. This is a “must” concert for Symphony fans, friends and supporters as it features romp and ceremony fitting for departing from this grand old hall.
The pre-concert “Music Behind the Music” talks by the engaging Ramón Araiza are held one hour before the concerts begin. These lively, informal and interactive talks last approximately 30 minutes and are free for ticket holders.
Soloist Augustin is the first-prize winner of the Indianapolis competition, Hadelich plays the 1683 ex-Gingold Stradivari violin and Tourte bow.
In December 1999, Hadelich almost lost his life in a fire at the family’s farm in Italy. His successful return to the concert stage after many operations and months of painful recovery is a testament to his talent and spirit.
