Description: Students will learn the basics of driving a bicycle confidently and safely on the road with other vehicles and will also learn basic bike maintenance tips like changing a flat tire and keeping a bike running smoothly.
Many people have thought about using a bike for getting around town or for fitness, but just don’t feel comfortable on the road with other vehicles. This class will show students how to make decisions in traffic while riding legally and confidently. Students will also practice changing a flat tire and other simple on-road repairs as well as on-bike handling skills and emergency avoidance maneuvers such as quick turns and stops. The class will also cover bicycle selection and will take participants out for a road ride with League Cycling Instructors (LCIs).
Anyone 16 years of age or older is welcome to participate and teens 14 years or older can attend with a chaperone. DAY 1 is a classroom session on Thursday from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm and includes an interactive PowerPoint presentation about common traffic scenarios (no bike is needed). DAY 2 happens on Saturday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. This session will cover bike maintenance, on-bike handling skills and a road ride.
Email CycleSmart@sbbike.org. for more info.
The cost is $30; some scholarships. A helmet and bicycle is required for Day 2, on Saturday, from 8:30am-3:30pm, and bicycles need to be in working order before the class.
