Description: Historically the United States has attempted to 'improve' human hereditary traits through various forms of intervention, genetic and otherwise, with the hopes of creating a "healthier, more intelligent" people with "desirable traits". The foundation of some genetic technologies and medical models, that have been used to pathologize and marginalize our communities, is steeped in the eugenic practices of the United States. Through a feminist and social justice lens, we will explore the ethical issues and political concerns of genetic technologies and take a closer look at historical and contemporary eugenic practices in relationship to our communities.
