Where: 1533 State St., (805) 966-3902

What: Neighborhood deli-meets-market with more than enough options to satisfy any hunger

How much? Sandwiches run under $10

The dish: The charming in an unaffected way Cantwell’s Market doesn’t try too hard, what with its avocado green pleather-ish booths and specialty sandwiches that come undressed (be sure to ask for the lettuce, tomato, etc.). “Take me for what I am,” it says in a falling voice from behind a fall of hair. Which is (cant)well enough, especially in a town like Santa Barbara that too often seems to achieve an insincere chic from botox, blank checks, and gimcracks. This is a place as real as its choices of Kettle Chips are long. Past the market selections you order at a counter and then wait (briefly) for your lunch and peruse the other possibilities. Sandwiches and salads are ready to grab n’ go for those impatient and/or on the run. Debbie’s Delights baked goods await for those who can calorically afford them. And besides sandwiches, there are breakfasts, grill orders, pizza – this is not a dining spot for the indecisive. Best of all, you can even get a tasty meatloaf sandwich here.
