Thanking the Firefighters

Posted August 14, 2007 by Ray Ford

Most recently, as I've watched the crews working on the Don Victor and Indian Creek fire lines work with intense fire around them to keep the fire moving north and away from us, I've been incredibly impressed with their dedication and valor. Here is an opportunity for any of you who would like, to share your appreciation.

I am amazed and impressed by all aspects of this effort. The crews on the front lines are dealing with unbelievable challenges, and the people trying to manage and coordinate this effort are facing a mind-boggling number of daily decisions, not to mention the intense pressure of trying to keep the firefighters and communities safe. Thank you again and again to all.

As a newcomer to SB, I attended the Town Hall meeting last Friday. It was an overflow crowd. I was immediately impressed with the support (applause) given to the fire fighters, police and other support personnel trying their best to inform, educate and bear up under the obvious strain of a fire of this magnitude. Having been involved with disaster planning for hurricanes, I know the huge task it is to plan, execute and communicate during a major crisis. I came away from the meeting concerned about the safety of the personnel fighting the fire and the safety of others personal property, but glad to live in a area so prepared for such an event (given the uncertainties of nature and the weather). My prayers and my appreciation are with all who are trying to control this fire and those citizens who are supporting the men and women who are on the front lines. Thanks.

Every time I think of the firefighters out there on the line I choke up, and I think of them often. Whatever anyone thinks of the early strategy on this fire, it shouldn't take away from our gratitude to these men and women who are out there day after day in conditions that would wear me to the bone in about two hours. They are saving our skins. I admire their energy and determination deeply, and I am very very thankful--it's hard to express how thankful.

As a former CDF firefighter in Northern California I know a little of what these men & women are enduring. The out of county firefighters have left home & families to help our local firefighters battle a major blaze for our benefit and safety.
Thank you for your bravery, hard work, patience and endurance! God bless and keep safe!
