Sound description: Mike McHugh’s ever-changing solo project straddles the line between acoustic-fueled Jack Johnson surf rock and funky, hip-hop à la Beck. Whatever category you care to shove him into, McHugh has a personality and a sound that can never truly be defined. —The Indy

History

Michael McHugh and his friends took more than a year to record the album he labels as “acoustic groove.” He says, “I look at songwriting as a writing of stories, and I look at this album as a collection of stories. A lot of it is character-based, coming from experiences I’ve had over the last 10 years.” McHugh recently founded Buzzard God Publishing here in Santa Barbara, and is currently working with several musicians, including Corey Linberg, Afro-groove group Ajao, and hip-hop artist Playbac. Fusing his own blend of hip-hop, reggae, Latin, and Afro-beat, McHugh’s lyric-driven story songs are available for free download at santabarbararecords.com. — Independent Staff
